»In Enescu, you hear a wealth of ideas and a wonderful compositional craftsmanship – eight voices are intricately interwoven, and the themes reappear in all movements in completely transformed ways. At the same time, there are powerful, almost raw moments.« (Tabea Zimmermann)

George Enescu - Octet op.7, for string orchestra
George Enescu’s Octet for Strings, composed when he was just a teenager, is a striking example of his early genius. Conceived as a single, expansive movement, the work reveals Enescu’s mastery of form and his ability to weave together intricate textures and melodies. At the top of the score, Enescu himself invites future adaptations for larger forces — an invitation taken up by Tabea Zimmermann and Ensemble Resonanz, who created an orchestral version. Their recording has been released by Harmonia Mundi in September 2025.
Lili Boulanger, the first woman to win the Prix de Rome in composition, left behind a small but remarkable body of work despite her short life. Her music is marked by emotional depth and a distinctive voice. »D’un soir triste«, one of her final works, unfolds a haunting, fragile beauty. Boulanger herself created several versions of the piece; for this program, Johannes Schöllhorn arranged it for viola and strings for Tabea Zimmermann.
Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major is one of the most refined examples of musical dialogue in the classical repertoire. Violin and viola engage in a rich and expressive exchange — at times intimate, at times virtuosic — supported and challenged by the ensemble. Positioned at the heart of the program, the work becomes a space of encounter: between soloists and ensemble, between individuality and shared sound.
