Adoration. Devotion. Genuflection. Those who bow too low before their idols often have problems getting back up, as even a boy wonder like Erich Wolfgang Korngold, whose string sextet expresses his love of Brahms, knows. Or they might simply be mistaken: the concerto by cellist Anton Kraft was once attributed to Joseph Haydn, who like Beethoven and Mozart was fascinated by Kraft's fantastic playing. Alban Berg's first piano sonata broke the spell of Beethoven worship that had put the music world to sleep - even though he had to pawn a few heirlooms in order to have it printed. Prayer is forbidden in art.
