Jean-Guihen Queyras
Artist in Residence 2010-2012 | Jean-Guihen Queyras realizes six programs with Ensemble Resonanz as soloist and artistic director, presenting these in Hamburg and on guest tours in Europe. The programmatic cooperation features the characteristic mix of classical repertoire and modern music that both Queyras and Ensemble Resonanz stand for.
Born in 1967 in Montreal, Canada, the French cellist is considered one of the leading cellists of his generation. He was solo cellist of the Ensemble Intercontemporain and recorded with it under the direction of Pierre Boulez Ligeti's cello concerto for the Deutsche Grammophon Society. His wide repertoire includes works of the classical and the romantic period as well as contemporary compositions, which he performs all over the world. Jean-Guihen Queyras is professor at the conservatory of Stuttgart and plays with Antje Weithaas, Daniel Sepec and Tabea Zimmermann in the worldwide renowned Arcanto-Quartett. Twice he was chosen artist of the year in 2008, - by the competition „Victoires de la Musique“ and by the readers of Diapason.
At the first meeting of Queyras and Ensemble Resonanz in January 2009, where they cooperated in two remarkably successful concerts at the Hamburg Laeiszhalle and the Berlin Philharmonie, they immediately were drawn to each other because of their musical kindred spirits. Now this productive cooperation will be deepened.
»Working together with Ensemble Resonanz I am able to fulfill my ideal of chamber music at the highest level. It’s similar to what I feel when playing quartet with the Arcanto or duo repertoire with Alexandre Tharaud. The basic musical understanding is so congenial that we can immediately start working on the specific musical language that will give the interpretation its identity.«
